What are the implications of technology on communication? In recent years, with the growth of the internet, communication has become easier and more convenient for the everyday person. However, many people criticize myspace/facebook/AIM as being too impersonal; that it is simply will never be as good as face to face communication. That laughter should never be replaced with an "lol." I've also heard a few humorous stories in which a girl broke up with a guy by means of a text message … classy, I know.

Many people who use instant messaging say that they are able to be more open and honest about what they think and who they are. They are unrestrained by what other people may think of them. This can allow for connections with people on a deeper level. Various websites (that I refuse to promote) attempt to match people up based on their "compatibility." They then chat online and get to know one another better and hopefully form a deeper relationship. It also allows for long distance relationships to survive. However the reverse can also be true; instant messaging is used by many to be deceitful. Sexual predators have been known to use instant messaging as a façade. They prey on ignorant teenagers. So my question to you, the audience, is; Do the pros of technology in communication outweigh the cons, or vice versa?

I used to have Myspace but then deleted it because it caused me and my boyfriend to have so many fights so I end up deleting it. Its true that internet communications does more cons than pros. Aim are always being hacked leading to invasion of our own privacy. I do wish that Myspace, Facebook, and Aim was never created but too bad it already has. So I just use it less often. But as for text messaging, I find it very convenient because it saves alot of minutes =D

I think I straddle the fence on this issue.

On one hand communication through technology is great. It's the easiest way for me to keep in touch with my friends. I'm not the type of girl to call up people and sit for hours talking. I'd rather just instant message them. It also allows me to avoid that awkward silence if I run out of things to talk to them about. My boyfriend also lives in TX and this is great because sometimes I'm too tired to sit on the phone with him or vice-versa.

However, I'm old fashion. I love receiving christmas cards and birthday cards and giving them out. I hate when people email me a merry christmas or happy birthday. It's so impersonal.

Alright like the rest of the comments so far I am also torn on the issue. However these are just tools for people to use, they are not inherently bad or good. It is how people use the that decides that. A lot of good has been created form these tools, it helps family stay in touch over distances. I currently am an out of state student here and AIM helps me stay in touch with my family in Maine without racking up the phone bill. Facebook is also a good tool to help stay in touch with old or new friends. Now personal meetings and conversations, and something said in person means a lot more then over the internet but we cant treat it like a replacement to real human interaction. You will never get the same experience as face-to-face, but its a useful and beneficial tool when used right.

you make a very good point, as with all technology it is not the technology itself but the person uses it ... like the "guns dont kill people, people kill people" mentality. Of course there arent many "pros" in the gun situation, except that maybe it protects you from other people with guns ... anyhow, thanks for the comment it was very insightful

As with all other new technologies, the person just has to be smart about it. Technology does not have to be a bad thing. We're told from the time we can communicate not to talk to strangers. That applies with internet. It doesn't have to cause trouble for anyone other than the people who want to be involved with it. Things like myspace and livejournal come in handy when people want to stay in touch. If it weren't for myspace, I wouldn't have kept up with anyone from high school. I don't use internet to meet new people. That should be left up to actual human interaction.

By the way, interesting title...
